GAITHER STEWART: IN SEARCH OF ITALY

The dream and the reality are far apart and the chasm is growing bigger with each passing day, affirms our correspondent Italy—at once anarchic, stubbornly individualistic and communitarian—is no longer everyone’s second motherland. Her warmth, her legendary charms and generosity, even her sense of humor captured in numerous postwar films, have been eroded by a [...]

Triumphalism on Berlin Wall Anniversary Is Unfounded

By Amitabh Pal, November 12, 2009 A false note of triumphalism is marking the twentieth anniversary of the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Certainly, the demise of the Stalinist system that ruled the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe was for the good. But it is wrong to assert—as many commentators are doing—that the people there [...]

Obama Hustles the Public for Greedy Private Insurers

Barack Obama may go down in history as one of the great presidential con men of any century. Meanwhile, the insurance industry will emerge vastly more powerful, buttressed by newly-created public-private structures…This should have been the year for single payer, or something close enough to it that the real deal might be achieved in another year or two. Some optimistic folks still think real health care reform can be resurrected sometime soon to replace Obama’s disastrous legislation. But that would be extremely difficult. Obama is establishing a private system backed by the federal government that will envelop virtually every citizen. The insurance industry will emerge vastly more powerful, buttressed by newly-created public-private structures nearly impossible to dismantle absent a general political upheaval in the United States.
