MITTELEUROPA GAMBLE—Bearding the Russkies one more time

THE SPECTER OF MITTELEUROPA RISES AGAIN, By Gaither Stewart Regrettably far too few people in America understand the criminally irresponsible policy followed now by several US administrations, that of encircling Russia with U.S. missile bases from Poland through central Europe and Kosovo to Georgia, Azerbaijan and central Asia., in an attempt to dominate the last standing independent superpower. As usual, many pretexts are used. U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke declared on February 20 that al Qaida is moving into former central Asian constituent parts of the Soviet Union, such as Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. Holbrooke is soliciting U.S. bases in these former Soviet republics under the guise of the ever-expanding “war on terror.” Such moves are extremely dangerous, as they could easily ignite another arms race, with unpredictable consequences for humanity. Freedom Rider: White American Terrorists

The authorities always keep two sets of books when it comes to “citizens’ violence”. That’s the way the Weimar Republic behaved, with tragic results that have become history. Solution to the Credit Crisis? The Campaign for State-owned Banks

The nationalization of banks should have been one of the main measures to pull the country out of the financial crisis. Even if a portion of the banking system had been left in private hands, the public option in credit would have soon shown its beneficial qualities to the nation and made commercial banks truly competitive or obsolete. Of course, none of that happened because all major White House policies must be approved first by Wall Street—i.e., the ruling class.

DANIEL ELLSBERG: Evaluating Obama so far

Says Daniel Ellsberg in this interesting interview: “On the issues I follow closely, it’s a another Bush term: at its best, Bush the father, but mostly the son. The rhetoric is different, for sure, but it’s so uncoupled from performance that I scarcely listen to the talk any more.

Yes, there still is a dime’s worth of difference between the parties–though not a whole lot more than that–but at this point, I wouldn’t give a dime for the rhetoric alone….”

Mythological politics

BY MICHAEL LINDThe key to understanding the populist right’s accusations that Obama is a socialist. The tea party movement may have been started by Washington lobbyists, but it has tapped into a powerful strain of American political culture — a strain that has always presented an obstacle to reform in the United States. Riffs On A Good Read

BY CASE WAGENVOORD “Liberals can take strong stands on minor community improvements; they can work themselves into a fury and campaign relentlessly and join sit-ins and carry placards concerning, let’s say, how the local school yard is to be used on weekends or about alternate days for trash pickup, and still ignore the concept of social justice for all. Viewed from a distance, I therefore am dubious about so-called grassroots activities: naturally they are welcome, but I suspect in the long run harmless. No wonder Power as a rule lets them sit-in, sit-out, march and carry little placards. Liberals, at the most, only potentially revolutionary, are Power’s ally and stand in the way of drastic social change.” IMAGE: A still from NCIS. The American media are accomplices in the worst contemporary crimes

BY CHRIS HEDGES “The very notion that on any given story all you have to do is report what both sides say and you’ve done a fine job of objective journalism debilitates the press,” the late columnist Molly Ivins once wrote. “There is no such thing as objectivity, and the truth, that slippery little bugger, has the oddest habit of being way to hell off on one side or the other: it seldom nestles neatly halfway between any two opposing points of view. The smug complacency of much of the press–I have heard many an editor say, ‘Well, we’re being attacked by both sides so we must be right’–stems from the curious notion that if you get a quote from both sides, preferably in an official position, you’ve done the job…”
