DESCRIPTION: The Century of the Self is a British television documentary film that focuses its attention on Sigmund Freud’s family, especially his daughter and nephew, who exerted a surprising amount of influence on the way corporations and governments throughout the 20th century have thought about, and dealt with, people.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, changed the perception of the human mind and its workings. His influence on the twentieth century is generally considered profound. The series describes the ways public relations andpoliticians have utilized Freud’s theories during the last 100 years for the “engineering of consent”.

Freud himself and his nephew Edward Bernays, who was the first to use psychological techniques in public relations, are discussed. Freud’s daughter Anna Freud, a pioneer of child psychology, is mentioned in the second part, as is one of the main opponents of Freud’s theories, Wilhelm Reich, in the third part.

Along these general themes, The Century of the Self asks deeper questions about the roots and methods of modern  consumerismrepresentative democracycommodification and its implications. It also questions the modern way we see ourselves, the attitudes to fashion and superficiality.

  1. CHOSEN COMMENT:
    I honestly, sincerely am having a hard time believing how many people seem to have watched this and completely ignored 99% of the information presented, not to mention the entire message of the documentary, in order to further an absurd conservative agenda, one that, ironically, they have been conditioned to serve by the very same methods outlined in these videos. Fantastic.

    @erwinclaus

    They accept it because it is easy.

    To tell you the truth: sometimes i’m laying in bed and I wish I was less intelligent sometimes. Why couln’t I just have the capacity to be a simple worker?. Life would be so much easier. My mind keeps thinking all the time. I can see why people want this state of mind that gives peace.
