Bob Costas went on a tirade at the end of the Winter Olympics regarding Russia, Putin, and the Ukraine. The response to his remarks on twitter were almost universally supportive. I was surprised and saddened by the total lack of any critical remarks. However, I have a feeling that they were being censored because I and a friend posted a couple of remarks that were critical; and they came down within 2 minutes of their being posted. Read more
Greg Palast is interviewed on RT (2/12/2014) with a discussion of the billionaires buying out our democracy – particularly the Koch brothers. He also talks about vulture capitalists and links it back to the Kochs (as a case in point.) See full clip at YouTube, or full program for 2/14/2014 at RT.TV.
A man I have respected for my entire life has passed away. He will be sorely missed, but the legacy he leaves and the paths he cut will endure. He was active in the struggle until the very end of his life. I hope that when I pass that the same can be said.
There is an excellent article by Dorian Lynskey at The Guardian has written an excellent reprise – “Pete Seeger: the man who brought politics to music.” He states:
“One of Pete Seeger’s greatest achievements was incorporating political activism into music, and realising that liberation struggles need a soundtrack.”

I think it is well past time for Obama to stand up and order a freeze on heating fuel prices across the areas being smacked again and again by “polar vortexes.” Much of the nation is experiencing a life threatening emergency. Yet there is silence from our President (much less any action on his part). For that matter, Washington as a whole seems to have their tongues frozen to the flag pole. Read more

On Friday January 17, 2014, the reports rolled out about Obama’s speech on the “data gathering” of the NSA. While watching Andrea Mitchell’s report on the NBC Nightly News (Jan. 17, 2014), there was a clip of Michael Hayden – former director of both the CIA and NSA.
The quote states:
“We aren’t out there hoovering everything in the universe up for some prurient interest. We are gathering data to make America more profitable for commercial enterprises.”
Indeed! I never expected such honesty – intended or not. Hayden also helps put into context Obama’s decision to essentially place all of the data gathered by the NSA into corporate hands for “storage.” That is certainly more profitable for commercial enterprises given the billions we have already spent creating storage space for the massive amount of data generated. One would have thought that just paying those commercial enterprises to build and equip those facilities for the NSA to store the “hoovering” would have been lucrative enough. It also takes the “middle man” (aka the NSA) out of picture by placing all of that data directly into the intended corporate hands. Profitable for sure.
Good grief. What have we come to?
